WHAT IS NAPOLEON HOLDING?
YES, IT'S A CAN

1795

At the beginning of the 18th century Napoleon Bonaparte was looking for ways to feed his soldiers simply and easily, so he commissioned a competition so that a method to preserve food longer would be invented.

AND THE
WINNER IS...

1809

A cook, Nicolas Francois Appert, won Napoleon’s 12,000 franc prize for "imprisoning" food in glass jars, sealing them with cork and tying them with wire. However, the glass jars broke on their way to the army camps.

THE FIRST FACTORY & THE FIRST CAN OPENER

1846

The first can factory was founded in Britain in 1846. The invention of the can opener followed in 1855.  Until then cans were opened with hammers, stones and knives!

AMERICAN DREAM

1900

America was delighted with what the can offered and it rapidly found its way into every American home. In 1900, mass can production in the USA exceeded 700 million cans.

CAN ART

1962

In 1962 avant-garde artist, Andy Warhol, used cans to make art, depicting 32 Campbell soup cans in what turned out to be one of his most significant works.

THE EVOLVING FAMILY BUSINESS

1972

Thanos Savvakis was born in Thessaloniki in 1972. From a young age he knew he'd follow in his father's footsteps and get involved with the family business. That's why he studied economics and business management in England and Scotland.

From the age of 13 his father gave him valuable work experience during the long summer breaks, mainly in the can factories of Skydra, a town in Northern Greece. He wanted his son to be well prepared, so that when the time would come he could step into his father’s shoes.

NATIONAL CAN
AND A BOLD MOVE

1999

In 1999 Thanos Savvakis’ family created the metal packaging industry, National Can Hellas SA, in Methoni, Pieria. In 2011, he consented to sell the company to the Irish multinational, Ardagh Metal Packaging Group, but continued to run it. Two years later he bought the business back.
